Esie Museum : First National Museum In Nigeria Established In 1945 – A Tour

Esie is situated about 60km southwest of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, Nigeria. The Public Gallery in Esie is the primary public historical center laid out by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1945 as a feature of the work to protect cultural heritage in the country.

 

The gallery was established in Esie due to the discovery of several soapstone artifacts found in the community.

The gallery and store of the National Museum Esie in Kwara State’s Irepodun Local Government Area house around 800 pieces of sculptured soapstone figures that are both stored and on show there.Mr. Ramsey (Church Missionary Society Inspector of Schools) found the soapstone figurines and informed the government about them in 1933.

 






The first Nigerian Museum was founded in 1945 at Esie as part of a plan to protect Nigeria’s cultural legacy.

Interesting stone technology can be found in the National Museum in Esie, but it needs proper conservation care and management to be preserved for the future.



The museum also boasts of showrooms that comprises of collection of arts, across Nigeria, that tells the story of cultural heritage of various tribes to visitors at the museum.
